Mrs. Tanaka went to visit Haruko at the hospital. Mrs. Hayashi is going to visit her tomorrow and is asking how to get to Tokyo Hospital.

I see. How long does it take from Tokyo Station to Azabu? |

Tanaka: |
It takes 30 minutes by bus. |
Mrs. Tanaka went to Tokyo Hospital last week. She took a bus from Tokyo Station and got off at Azabu. It took 30 minutes from Tokyo Station to Azabu. Then she walked about 5 minutes to Tokyo Hospital.

1. For TŌKYŌ EKI DE BASU NI NORIMASHITA. AZABU DE (BASU O) ORIMASHITA. Note the particles used:
BASU NI NORIMASU, “take/get on a bus”
BASU O ORIMASU, “get off the bus”
TŌKYŌ EKI DE, “at Tokyo Station”
AZABU DE, “at Azabu”
2. An approximate time period is expressed by the suffix –GURAI. E.g. 5-FUN GURAI “about 5 minutes”, 2-JIKAN GURAI “about 2 hours”, 3-SHŪKAN GURAI “about 3 weeks”. Do not confuse with GORO, which expresses an approximate specific time.
3. How many minutes, hours, days is expressed as NAN-PUN, NAN-JIKAN, NAN-NICHI. To ask in a more general way, DONOGURAI, “how long” may be used. DONOGURAI is also used to ask how much something will cost.

1. Hikōki wa gozen 8-ji 10-pun ni Narita Kūkō o demasu. “The airplane leaves Narita Airport at 8:10 A.M.”
2. Sumisu-san wa gogo 3-ji ni Narita Kūkō ni tsukimashita. “Mr. Smith arrived at Narita Airport at 3:00 P.M.”
3. Tōkyō Eki de basu ni notte, Ginza de basu o orite kudasai. “Take the bus from Tokyo Station and get off at the Ginza.”
4. (Watashi no) Uchi kara eki made basu de 10-pun kakarimasu. “It takes 10 minutes by bus from my house to the station.”
